About the Role

We are looking for a brilliant and inspiring Head of Product Design and Delivery role at PCA. The role is a blend of team leadership, instructional design, and product development.

The Products team are responsible for developing and managing all aspects of our design and delivery process. The Head of Product Design and Delivery role manages the workflows across the various projects and team members, and actively engages in design and development projects. This is a leadership role, with accountability for in-person, hybrid, and virtual design output, as well as the success of the entire Products function.

As a minimum you will need 5+ years of Instructional Design experience, having led complex global L&D and leadership development projects, including experience of designing in-person experiential learning programmes. You will be passionate about experiential learning and design, and you’ll be at your best creating and innovating new experiential learning products. You will be able to quickly interpret business needs and client briefs and turn them into extraordinary creative solutions. You will ensure the design and creative deliverables are aligned to stakeholder expectations and executed within budget and deadlines by the Product team. To do this effectively you will have extensive experience of managing a team and it will involve you, firstly, using your best practice toolkit to implement new processes and practices to improve the efficiency of the design function as a whole. Secondly you will use your Leadership capabilities to actively mentor and develop the design skills across the team.

While you are a creative designer, you also have core skills which are people and operationally focused. You understand the need to balance engaging design with the commercial framework provided by the Revenues Team and will endeavour to build excellent working relationships across PCA. Celebrating success (new design and products, sharing participant feedback etc) is important to you and you will actively promote knowledge share in your day to day. As the Head of a function, you are driven by a motivation to get the best out of others and improve process to facilitate others’ success.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

Leadership / Head of Function

  • The role will involve attending weekly Leadership Team meetings and representing the Products team at a Leadership level, ensuring key messaging is imparted to the Products team so that they achieve their objectives
  • Play an active role within the Leadership Team, contributing to enterprise thinking and discussions and being part of the decision-making process for strategic enterprise-wide issues
  • Work closely with other Heads of to ensure the Products team is fully integrated and collaborating effectively with the other functions in the business
  • A key element of the role is to actively seek ways to build inter-team cooperation, understanding and best practice
  • Develop and manage productivity and continuously improve the Product Team’s design capabilities
  • Own project allocation and capacity planning for the Product Team to ensure that design projects are delivered on time
  • Support the Product Team with setting realistic and achievable design milestones and communicate them with the internal team and clients
  • Overseeing the effective sourcing, managing and utilisation of external faculty is undertaken whilst maintaining strong, working relationships.
  • Deliver timely developmental and positive feedback to support the team to continuously grow
  • Lead quarterly 1:1s to review and set individual quarterly objectives which support Product Team and organisational objectives
  • Hold monthly 1:1s with all your team members to ensure they are on track and moving towards achieving their personal and team-based objectives
  • Uphold best practice within the Product Team, applying your best practice toolkit to implement new processes and practices to improve the efficiency of the design function
  • Provide quality control over design outputs and production
  • Ensure that all design output/visuals are consistent with the overall brand
  • Liaise with Head of Operations to optimise the way we share data and knowledge in the business around products

Instructional Design

  • Take a leading role in managing the design of complex internal and client Custom design projects across delivery formats: in person, hybrid and virtual
  • Support the Product Team Instructional Designer(s) with high level instructional design support in order to then hand over to team members for detailed design execution
  • Help to shape productisation of PCA products with the leadership team and wider business.
  • Collaborate on productisation and the development of core/ready to learn products that advance our brand and proposition strategy and mission statement with the Product Designer(s)
  • Keep abreast of trends in experiential learning and share best practice and knowledge share internally and with clients
  • Contribute to innovation and creativity when it comes to new experiential learning solutions

Business Development

  • Liaising with the Client Relationship Directors, build wider understanding across the business of PCA content solutions and products
  • Pro-actively collaborate with the Revenues (Sales) team to generate ideas for pitching and proposals
  • Distil abstract business concepts and client needs into elegant creative products to be included in proposals
  • Pitch design ideas confidently and present vision clearly to clients, leveraging extensive L&D design experience to demonstrate ROI
  • A strong working knowledge of online and offline design process including experiential design methodology
  • The ability to storyboard or translate ideas to designers and others, influencing external and internal stakeholders

Skills and competencies

  • Five or more years of experience as a senior-level instructional designer. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience designing leadership programmes and directing complex solutions for blended (digital on-demand, virtual, in-person and hybrid) learning products
  • Extensive experience of designing experiential in-person programmes
  • Significant people management experience leading and managing a creative team (including leadership, team building, and delegation)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate the creative vision, concepts, ideas, and solutions clearly and effectively to stakeholders, internal teams, and clients
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects from concept to completion
  • A strong working knowledge of online and offline design process including experiential design methodology, knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography & limitations of online and offline design work and attention to detail
  • The ability to storyboard or translate ideas to designers and others, influencing external and internal stakeholders
  • Experience with design software and high degree of competency across Microsoft Office products suite and a range of productivity software.

Further details

  • Working days 4-5 days per week, hybrid working between London office and home (2-3 days in the office as core pattern with additional days as needed for the role)

  • Base salary range £55,000 – £65,000 (FTE) dependent on experience
  • 5% Company Performance Bonus and 5% Personal Performance Bonus (at the business’ discretion) normally paid in two 6 monthly stages
